ABOUT IGNITE VITALITY: MULBERRY

A Multifaceted Pilot Project

Quality housing
and neighborhoods
provide a foundation
for success in all
parts of life.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Through Ignite Vitality: Mulberry, collaborative partners aim to maximize quality housing, strengthen neighborhood identity, support businesses, improve infrastructure, and enhance family connection, amplifying opportunities for Muscatine residents in the area.

We’re investing in four key areas – housing, commercial development, infrastructure, and community connection.

Components of the project include:

  • Grants for homeowners and businesses for façade improvements

  • New pocket park

  • Lighting, sidewalk, and crosswalk improvements

  • New home construction

  • Lead/hazard abatement opportunities

  • Connections to community resources

A shared need recognized by local leadership is housing stock and affordability. Muscatine County has the third-highest cost of housing in Iowa, and 35% of houses in Muscatine were built before 1940, according to Iowa State University.

THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Right in the heart of Muscatine, just two blocks from our vibrant downtown, sits a neighborhood rich in history, character, and untapped potential.

This unique area is home to over 170 residences, a variety of local businesses, and Jefferson Elementary School—a hub of energy and learning for the highest concentration of school-age children in Muscatine.

With some of the city’s oldest homes, this neighborhood reflects the legacy of Muscatine’s past and the promise of its future.
